1040 S. Grand Avenue, Downtown LA Exit 110 N. Fwy at 9th, right on Flower, left on Olympic, right on S. Grand (213) 746-9200 Sun - Sat: 4pm - 2am Cover: $6 after 6pm (VISA, MC) Dance fee: $30/hr with 20 minute minimum Map There have been a number of changes to this club since my last review. The rear entrance is now closed. There is still free parking in the rear (on the corner of Olympic and Olive). The 10 minute minimum has been increased to 20 minutes, and the girls are now required to take a 30 minute break during the course of their shift. Also, apparently one of the shifts ends at 12:30; and if the club isn't busy they let that shift go home early. This club is not to be confused with the Grand Avenue Club, the regular dance club formerly known as The Shark Club, just a few doors up the street. This is perhaps the only Latino club aside from Tropical that I can recommend -- not because the action is so good (it seems to go in cycles), but because if you’re a gringo you’ll be less likely to feel out of place here than the other Latino clubs (Tropical also being an exception). They have a high percentage of non-Latino customers, primarily Asians and blacks with a sprinkling of gringos. This is just about the only Latino club besides Tropical where you will find girls of other ethnicities. The reason for this is management can’t seem to make up their mind if they want it to be a traditional, dance intensive Latino club or a more tip intensive, moderate mileage club like Flamingo used to be (see discussion under Las Palmas above). Although I haven't been there in over two years, I hear the quality of the girls has picked up. The problem is that if you're one of those who prefers couch action (like me) there's no privacy. The couples area now has couches all around the perimeter of the room facing inward, which means the occupants all have a good view of the inner couches. Now the only place for action is on the dance floor. I heard that some of the girls who used to work there derisively refer to it as “LA Grind,” as it is basically a grind factory (sort of a Latinized version of the old Flamingo, for those who remember that club). Like most Latino clubs, the place appears designed to encourage you to dance, as there is no place to sit down except for the stools around the snack bar. There is a single large, enclosed dance floor in the main room just past the front counter at the top of the stairs. Just outside this room are a few couches, and there is an adjacent couch area that used to be the main dance floor. There are cameras trained on both the dance floor and the couches. |
