307 W. 4th Street, Downtown LA Exit 110 N at 4th/3rd exit, left on fork, right on fork, merge to W. 4th. (213) 620-9572 Sun - Sat: 5pm - 2am Cover: $7 (VISA, MC, ATM) Dance fee: $30/hr, one hour minimum on credit/ATM cards Food: Snack bar w/light snacks, candy, soft drinks, etc. Security parking: $5.00 after 4:00 PM, free after 8:00 PM. Other: Video games. No pool tables. Map Located across the street from the Bunker Hill project, it has a somewhat better locale than most of the downtown clubs. This is actually a fairly clean and well-maintained club by downtown standards, and the clientele as well as the girls are a cut above most clubs. Unfortunately, the quality of the girls isn't what it used to be. Most are still 7's and up, but there are fewer 8's and 9's. The percentage of Latinas is now easily over 50%, with about half of those being foreign-born (mostly from Central America). There are still more white girls that at any other club with the possible exception of Starlight. A fair amount of this latter group is Eastern European, mainly from Russia. There is a new dress code. No sweats, no shorts, no sandals w/o socks. If you're not sure is your attire would be appropriate, you can always call ahead. The girls get their pick of four shifts to work: 5-10, 8-12 (this explains why there are often more cards in the rack than there are girls after 12 AM), 8-2, and 10-2. They have to be there within a half-hour after the shift starting time or they don’t get paid for their minutes. Weekends are slow before 8:00, especially before 6:30. During the week there may be anywhere from 12 to 16 girls by 5:30, and up to maybe 25 by 6:30. The TV room is closed until 8:00 PM. You can tell how many girls are working by counting the cards in the rack behind the clock stand. A colored card means the girl is there and not clocked in. A white card in front of the colored card means she’s there and clocked in with a customer. Security makes regular sweeps about every 15 minutes, sometimes more often. In between their sweeps Sleepy (ex-Flamingo assistant manager), who now doubles as a cashier and security guard, will also come by from time to time. You've got to watch out for not only security, but also the waitresses as well. They have been instructed to report any improprieties they see to management. Reportedly the girls are now being required to sign some sort of "probation notice" on the first offense, with the understanding they'll be fired if caught again. After holding out for many years, the club has now installed cameras, although I don't know to what extent they have affected the action. The couches in the front part of the TV room have also been turned around to face the entrance and there is now a TV in the rear area as well, thereby creating two TV rooms. Over the years there has been a lot of speculation about the club's future. The City has big plans for the Pershing Square area, just one block away. However, all the maps of the redevelopment area that I've seen published in the newspaper do not include the street where the club is located. |
